DESTINATION: FARMERS' MARKET! Farmers markets around the world—delectable, dynamic, and like a heartbeat, almost every town has one. From the piazza to the bazaar. From an enchanting market floating on a lake in Viet Nam to the dense urban spice bazaars in Old Delhi. A colorful food-lovers’ paradise crafted by culture and formed by generations of relationships between farmers, chefs, vendors, and families.

A new series that explores the sometimes gritty and always vibrant farmers’ markets around the world. Each episode tells a special story of history, tradition, and innovation while celebrating how farmers’ markets reflect cultural identity and local food and farm ethos.

Our dynamic experts, Debbie Barker & Alison Caldwell, lead us on an enlightening adventure into the pulse of these lively marketplaces and behind the scenes of beekeepers, bakers, cheesemakers, chocolatiers, seed savers, soil, and so much more! Join us as we journey into the world of vibrant farmer's markets, thriving culinary traditions, and the global heroes who farm our food.

MEET YOUR GUIDES! Debbie Barker & Alison Caldwell first met on a rustic organic research farm in northern India. Instant friends, they soon realized they were two former theatrical peas in a pod turned agricultural geeks (experts, actually!) with a passion for film, food, and farms.

  • DEBBIE BARKER: International food author, speaker, journalist, and policy expert, Debbie Barker has worked on food and agriculture issues for over a decade. In her roles as international director at Center for Food Safety, based in Washington, D.C., and director of the International Forum on Globalization, she has worked on both policy and grassroots fronts on a broad array of food and farm issues—climate change, trade and investment agreements, organic standards, genetic engineering, hunger and malnutrition, water and natural resources, indigenous peoples, developing country economies, and much more. She has spoken at venues such as the European Union Parliament, United Nations, and U.S. federal agencies, and authored numerous publications including Trade Matters—Impacts on Food and Farming; Fatal Harvest: The Tragedy of Industrial Agriculture; and was on the committee of authors for the International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD), a report of the World Bank and United Nations. She has consulted on various videos and films. Prior to engaging on food issues, Debbie performed musical theatre and opera—singing Sondheim to Strauss—in the U.S. and abroad.

  • ALISON CALDWELL: Good food advocate, educator, author, and creative producer, Alison Caldwell holds a master’s degree in Food Systems and Culture from New York University. Her care for a fair food system inspired her to pursue a path where food, culture, and politics merge. Alison has traveled the globe teaching and researching food and farming. She presently resides in her native Southern California where she lectures, inspires, and creatively informs children and adults around the nation about the integrity and joy of food & cooking. Alison has lived and worked in India where she developed courses around food politics and organic farming. Alison is a 2014 Alice Waters Edible School Yard Academy alum. She is a contributing author in Taking Food Public: Redefining Foodways in a Changing World, for her work titled, “Will Tweet for Food,” and was a 2011 visiting artist at the James Beard Foundation Greenhouse Gallery with her solo photography show, “Hong Kong Foodscapes.” With over 30 years of experience in media and television, Alison’s producing credits have been aligned with A&E, TLC, Discovery, and the FOODnetwork to name a few. Alison also has a background in singing and acting for theatre, television, and commercials. She is trained in acting, singing, voice and speech, and movement for stage.
